12 year old Ashlyn Davison of the Fort Wayne Volleyball Club 12 Blue Thunder was looking forward to traveling to Orlando, Florida with her teammates for the 2014 AAU Girls’ Junior National Volleyball Championships. Unfortunately, a last minute injury prevented her from going, but she never stopped supporting her team.
On June 2nd, the last day of school, she was playing a game of Sharks and Minnows with classmates on the playground. She collided with a 7th grader and bumped her head pretty hard on the ground. She ended up with a mild concussion but was released by the doctor on June 10th to return to practice. Practice was going well at the beginning but as the intensity increased, she dove for a ball, bending back her fingers and bumping her head again. The coach didn’t want to take any chances and was worried that she might still be symptomatic from the previous concussion and wouldn’t allow her to play for her own safety.
Ashlyn was obviously disappointed that she couldn’t attend, but she kept in contact with her teammates to see how the tournament was going. They also used the AAU Volleyball app and the AAU’s social media sites to stay up-to-date on what was happening at the event.
At the end of the event, the Fort Wayne Volleyball Club finished 19th in the 12 Club division and was one of two teams that played three sets against the champions of their division.
Her mother, Janet Davidson, said Ashlyn hopes to play in next year’s tournament, but it all depends on what the next year brings.
Good luck in the future Ashlyn and we hope to see you at next year’s AAU Girls’ Junior National Championships!
