RENO, Nev. (May 22, 2014) —The 13th Annual Jam On It Reno Memorial Day Basketball Tournament kicks off Saturday, May 24 with a record-breaking 1,100 boys and girls teams from more than 10 different states.
“It is the largest sanctioned, AAU basketball event in the country,” said Matt Williams, Jam On It CEO. “We’re very excited for the talent that will be coming through Reno for the three-day event. This tournament gives players and spectators the chance to watch endless amounts of basketball without having to drive too far.”
More than 85 courts will be laid between the Reno-Sparks Convention Center and Downtown Reno Events Center. This year, three wood courts will be set up outside the convention center to give it a Rucker Park feel.
The Reno Memorial Day Basketball Tournament has seen immense growth since its inaugural year in 2002, when it hosted just 82 teams. Last year, just over 1,000 teams played on 73 courts. This year, 100 more teams and 13 additional courts have been added to the lineup. The Reno Memorial Day tournament is set to bring in an estimated $8.1 million to Reno over the three-day event.
“The Jam On It Memorial Day Basketball Tournament is a fantastic example of how sporting events can grow and thrive in Northern Nevada,” said Reno Tahoe USA President and CEO Christopher Baum. “Matt Williams and his team have done an excellent job growing this competition into the largest in the world, and Reno Tahoe is thrilled to welcome new athletes every year, and to be a part of Jam On It’s continued success.”
The added partnership with Reno Tahoe USA has been an integral part of the tournament’s success.
“It’s great to see that teams enjoy their experience and keep coming back to Reno year after year,” said Williams. “The partnership with Chris Baum and Reno Tahoe USA has been a big reason the Jam On It Reno Memorial Day Tournament is where it is today.”
Boys and girls basketball teams second grade through varsity will be divided into one of three divisions—elite, competitive or recreation. Action will kick off Saturday, May 24 with pool play games and conclude on Monday, May 26 with championship games and awards.
Spectators coming to watch the action Memorial Day weekend will have one of two options when paying. There is an all-tournament pass ($30 for Adults, $20 for Seniors and Youth) or a one-day wristband ($15 for Adults, $10 for Seniors and Youth). All kids six and under will be let in for free.
