The Volunteer State is becoming a force in girls’ basketball and Memphis is a big part of that program. The Middle and East Tennessee girls’ basketball clubs are well established clubs with multiple teams starting as young as the third grade. The TN Lady Trotters, TN Team Pride and TN Flight tend to dominate in AAU Tennessee State Qualifier and National tournaments. However, the Memphis Future Stars are becoming a force to reckon with in Tennessee as well.
There were several Tennessee teams that made the 2013 Preseason AAU Power Ranking list in grades fourth through seventh and the Memphis Future Stars were one of those teams.
The Memphis Future Stars, an AAU program based out of Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church, won the State AAU 6th Grade Girls Division II Championships in Franklin, Tenn. on May 12, by defeating TN Team Pride 47 to 38. The Memphis Future Stars capped off an undefeated season by defeating all five opponents in the tournament. In addition, this team also has an AAU 9th place 2013 6th grade Division II Preseason National Power Ranking. The team went on to win the state Youth Basketball of America (YBOA) 6th grade girls Championship in Murfreesboro, Tenn. on June 3, by defeating Murfressboro Lady Stars 43 to 23.
Memphis continues to be dominated by boys’ basketball exposure and support. The girls’ basketball clubs continue to struggle for gym availability, team sponsors and coaches for the young player’s development. The Memphis Future Stars are making whole hearted strides in overcoming the challenges facing the development of young girls’ basketball skills in the city and surrounding areas.
