Florida AAU Taekwondo District Director

A few years ago, Florida AAU Taekwondo District Director David Turnbull attended to the Scottish Highland Games. The Highland Games are events held in countries around the world to celebrate Scottish heritage and culture. While the games are centered around Scottish heavy athletics, bagpipes, drumming and dancing, the games also offer exhibits related to Scottish culture.

While attending the Games, David would watch the athletes compete in the Caber Toss (a pole that weighs 175lb and is 22 feet tall), the Hammer Toss and 5 other events, where the competitors compete to see who can throw the heavy objects the highest and the farthest.

After watching the Games, David decided he could no longer sit on the sidelines; so he started competing.

“After I became a District Director I could no longer compete in AAU Taekwondo, I missed the competition” says David about competing in the Games. Since his first event in Winter Springs, FL last year he has competed in six (6) different competitions. He has won the Caber Toss multiple times. Each competitor gets three attempts to score a 12:00 o’clock on the Caber Toss. 12:00 o’clock is achieved when the Caber flips 180 degrees and hits the ground at a perfect 90 degree angle.

David has not only won the Caber Toss multiple times but has also scored the highest combined score in all seven events to take the title of All Around Champion.  David’s next completion will be June 9th in Georgia.
