This year, Jesse Horn from Buffalo City, Wisconsin was awarded the Joel Ferrell Outstanding Performance Award at the 2014 AAU Junior Olympic Games. The 17 year old has an impressive résumé, in the sport stacking community and beyond. Horn started stacking when he was just nine years old in 2006 when he saw a commercial for sport stacking on television and asked for his own set of cups. Since then, he has practiced almost every day since. After competing in his first sport stacking event in 2010, he has since been invited to compete on Team USA.
When he was 13, he decided that he wanted to tell his sport stacking friends a little more about himself and divulged that he had autism. He made the announcement via YouTube and received a huge amount of support from his stacking friends.
He has dominated the sport stacking world, even taking overall honors in his age division at the AAU Junior Olympic Games a year ago, but what he’s done outside of the sport stacking community is even more important. He started by giving a sport stacking presentation at a conference for kids with disabilities in Wisconsin; the next year he was asked to return as a keynote speaker. He mentored a young autistic boy, using stacking as a way to get the boy to communicate and make eye contact.
Horn has been featured in newspaper articles and on television and has made several special appearance. Next year he will be presenting sport stacking at the Wisconsin Autism Society’s Annual Conference.
Outside of sport stacking, he also joined the Drama and Forensics club at his high school and has excelled. He even earned a silver and bronze medal in the State Forensics meet.
Congratulations to Jesse Horn and good luck in all of your future endeavors!
