AAU Volleyball member Alexa Filley was once told she would never make it as a setter.
"It's always been a struggle. When I was younger I was even smaller," said Alexa Filley, 2013-14 Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year. "They kept telling me I couldn't be a setter with my height.
"It was a little hard at times, but in the end I realized that size doesn't matter and I can do the same things as we very other setter with a little hard work and determination."
The 5'9" Auburn commit has channelled past criticism into much success on the court, most notably winning the 2013-14 Gatorade National and Kentucky Player of the Year.
"It's been incredible (speaking of her senior season and accolades)," said Filley. "I couldn't imagine it going any better."
Filley arrived in Orlando this past week with her club team Asics Kiva 18 Red in search of a national title. They came up just short in the 18u Open semifinal, falling to eventual national champs Mizuno Sports Performance.
"We fought really hard. I'm so proud of my team. We just came up short in the end," said Filley.
Filley has amassed quite a prep resume over the last four years, including being named to the 2014 AAU Volleyball 18u Open All-American list. She's led Assumption High School to four-straight volleyball titles. During her senior campaign, Filley recorded 1,248 assists for an average of more than 11 per game and hit .489 en route to 102 kills. Filley is a Second Team Under Armour All-American and two-time First Team All-State honoree.
In the classroom, she has maintained a 3.86 GPA and scored in the 91st percentile on the ACT.
Filley will be playing for Auburn University in the fall. When asked what her goals are for her freshman season, she replied: "I hope we make the tournament (NCAA). Also, I just want to be able to contribute as much as I can to the team."
