The Detroit Sports Commission (DSC) was recognized with the Spirit of Detroit Award by Councilman James Tate this morning at the Detroit City Council meeting for successfully securing and hosting the 2013 AAU Junior Olympic Games that took place July 24 - Aug. 3 in metro Detroit.

The AAU Junior Olympic Games attracted more than 25,000 visitors to the region, including 10,000 athletes, and delivered an estimated $40 million in direct spending to area hotels, restaurants, retail and attractions.

On hand to accept the award was the DSC's Sean Krabach, who served as the director of the event, and Detroit Police Athletic League track team members and participants in this year’s event.

They included Erin Bradley, 14, of Southfield and Christopher Thames Jr. ,11, of Redford, and coach Darnell Hall, who is also a Detroit police officer and former Olympic gold medalist. Bradley finished ninth-overall out of 80 competitors in this year's event, while Thames came in second in the 800-and 1500-meter runs.

"The DSC is in place to host sporting events, similar to the AAU Junior Olympic Games, to enhance the economy and image of the metro Detroit region," Krabach told the council. "While bringing this event does just that, this event is unique because it gives local youth athletes, like Erin and Christopher, the opportunity to compete against athletes on a national level."

Held annually throughout the United States, Detroit last hosted the games in 2003 and 2008, and is one of five cities in a rotation to host the games through 2016.  Other sites include Des Moines, Iowa; Houston, Texas; New Orleans, La.; and Hampton Roads, Va
