HOOP STAR HANDED ’I HAVE A DREAM’ SPEECH

HOOP STAR HANDED ’I HAVE A DREAM’ SPEECH

Aug. 28 marks the 50-year anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Better known from that day: Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. In the video above, CBS News special correspondent James Brown tells the story of former college basketball player and coach George Raveling, and how he came into possession of King's speech.

In 2013, Raveling received the John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He is currently Nike's director of international basketball.

Personally, I find this to be one of the more fascinating college basketball-related stories of the past few years. Who knows how much that speech is worth on the open market. Yet here's a man who was in the right spot at the right time and asked a simple question. Fifty years later, he still cherishes one of the true articles of impact in modern American history.
