Team NLP from Chicago faced off against Team Thad-Young in the 11th Grade DI National Championship game. Both teams fought hard to make it to the championship game, with Team Thad edging out Team Work-Ohio with a slim two point victory in the semi-finals. Team NLP defeated a tough Martin Brothers Legacy squad from Iowa, 65-54, to qualify for the Nationals Championship game.
Scoring guard Simmie Cobb started the game quickly for Team NLP, with 4 early points and grabbing rebounds on both ends of the floor. For Team Thad it was Leron Black & Riley Norris carrying the scoring in the first quarter. Strong shooting by both teams kept it close until Simmie Cobb exploded for 4 points in the last minute. Cobb, a 2015 prospect, was the key player in the first quarter, helping Team NLP build their 18-13 lead.
At the start of the second quarter, both teams traded baskets. However, Team NLP went to work on the defensive end of the court and Team Thad’s Ladarius Coleman grabbed 6 points in the quarter, cutting the deficit to 26-23. Into halftime, Team NLP led 30-25 over Team Thad.
In the third quarter, quick scoring by Team Thad cuts the lead to 30-25. Javon Carter back to work scoring on two straight possessions for Team NLP, bringing the score to 41-34. At the 3rd quarter buzzer, Javon Carter converts the old school three-play for a 46-36 lead.
Team Thad down 52-38, after giving up four quick points. Team NLP coasted to victory after making 5/8 free throws in the final minutes of the game. Team NLP defeats Team Thad, 62-49, making them the 2013 AAU 11th Grade DI National Champions!
