Girard’s G’Mrice Davis to play hoops at Fordham

G’Mrice Davis was heavily recruited by a number of Division I schools, which is no surprise because she’s one of the top basketball players in the city. Davis is an outstanding senior at Girard College, she decided to sign a letter of intent to Fordham University in the Bronx, New York. She had received interest from St. John’s, Saint Joseph’s, La Salle, Texas El Paso and James Madison. However, Davis was really impressed with Fordham and its basketball program.

“Coach [Stephanie] Gaitley [Fordham head women’s basketball coach] made me feel comfortable,” Davis said.

“She was really nice and outgoing. That was a major part of it. I really liked Fordham. I went on a visit to Fordham. The campus is beautiful. I’m like, ‘Wow.’ I really loved the campus. It kind of reminded of Girard how it has a big wall around it. When you step off campus, you’re in the city. I really enjoyed that part. It was like a piece of home to me.

“I like I was home. I fit in so well with all the girls. They made me feel comfortable. They opened up to me. At the end of the day, it came down to the relationships. The other schools I was looking at they all had good things to offer just like Fordham. The biggest thing was the realtionship over the recruiting process. I had the strongest relationship with Coach Gaitley.”

Fordham plays in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Davis will only be a short train ride away from Philly. In addition, she will be able to play in front of her family and friends when she comes home. La Salle and Saint Joseph’s are members of the A-10.

The 6-foot-2 senior from Southwest Philly plays for head coach John Brown at Girard College. Davis, a team captain and two-time MVP at Girard College guided the Lady Cavaliers to the PIAA Class A District I championship and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs. Girard College has been a real powerhouse in the Penn Jersey League.

Davis also plays for the Philly Triple Threat AAU program, which has provided her with a great opportunity to play some good basketball. The program has allowed her to develop her ballhandling and shooting skills.

“My AAU coaches have had a big impact on what I do,” Davis said. “I came in the eighth grade. They just molded me. Coach Dave Hargrove is like my dad. I call him dad some times. Ever since eighth grade, he’s worked with me. I would say he has had the biggest impact on my basketball career. Actually, it’s been three people who had a big impact on my career Dave Hargrove, Jonathan Taylor [AAU coach] and Michael Harris.”

Davis has a great basketball foundation that should help her at Fordham.
