2002 National AAU Hall of Fame inductee and longtime AAU volunteer Martha Townley, 65, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 13. Recipient of the 1987 National AAU Parks and Recreation Woman of the Year award and 1988 President Leadership Award, Martha was very active in the Southeastern AAU offices, serving as governor for 14 years and soccer chairperson for 23 years. In the AAU, Martha served on the Executive Board, as National Soccer Chairman, co-chair of the Governor’s Council and site committee for the AAU Junior Olympic Games along with several other committees. In 30 years with the City of Florence Parks and Recreation Department, she started the first soccer program and served as the athletic supervisor for the City of Florence Parks and Recreation Department.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at Elkins East Chapel in Killen, Ala. There is a private viewing for family and friends from 9am to 10am, visitation from 10am-11:45am and a service concluding with a burial in Civitan Cemetery in Rogersville, Ala.
