Another sport has come and gone from the 2014 AAU Junior Olympic Games! Weightlifting was a one day event that took place on July 26th in the Iowa Events Center. Several competitors took home shiny, new medals, along with bragging rights!
Several weightlifting athletes also competed in Powerlifting the day before but if that affected their lifting skills at all, you couldn't tell. For the boys 11U division, Aaron Flickner, Grant Schwerdtfeger, Brixton Maizels, Maximus Crofton, Caleb Schwerdtfeger and Lester Jennings. In the 12-13 year old division, John Brown, Collin Weiderlin, Ian Estopare, Spencer Carr, Broderick Ulrich, Kenneth Callen and Justin Henderson took home the gold medals. Connor Austin, Edward Brown, Drew Pashik, Logan Hofstedt, Justin Flickner, Dean Scicchitano and Wasey Crain took home the gold in the 14-15 division. For the 16-17 division, Brian Fox, D'Angelo Ross, Zachary Burks, Andrew Egge, D'Andre Polk, Xavier Fontenot and Connor Flaten took top honors in their division and in the oldest division, the 18-19, Braeden Vaughn and Christian Hissong. The Best Male Lifters in each division for the boys were Maximus Crofton (11U), Ian Estopare (12-13), Drew Pashik (14-15), Zachary Burks (16-17) and Braeden Vaughn (18-19).
In the girls' competition, Courtlin Hissong, Emersyn Walsh, Lorelau Petrie, Abigail Flickner, Sarah Henderson, Alyia Stillman, Bailey Monk, Chloe Crooks and Glennys Ross took home the gold honors in the girls' 11U division. Gabrielle Scicchitano, Camille Uhlenkamp and Hailey Beuscher were the top winners in the girls' 12-13 year old division champions. For the 14-15 division, Alexandra Lazarus, Alexa Burks, A'Leah Ross, Emily Comancho, Holly Louviere and Victoria Crooks claimed the gold. Elizabeth Weesner, Isabelle Jennings and Alyssa Fontenot were the winners in the 16-17 year old division. Finally, in the 18-19 division, Maggie Lee and Marissa Klingseis took home the gold in their division. The Best Female Lifter in each age division was Lorelai Petrie (11U), Camille Uhlenkamp (12-13), Alexa Burks (14-15), Elizabeth Weesner (16-17) and Marissa Klingseis (18-19).
Team Awards were given to the Wesley Weightlifters in the 11U, 14-15 and the Overall Female divisions. The Overall Male winner was South Beauregard Weightlifting, who also had the Coach of the Year, Mike Robinson, leading their team.
Marissa Klingseis from Wesley, took home the Joel Ferrell Outstanding Performance Award for the Weightlifting portion of the 2014 AAU Junior Olympic Games.
