After three days of play I could not be more excited to go into day four. Today was filled with great volleyball and lots of excitement. There were moments of nervousness, and moments of stress. However, all of those moments led to the excitement that filled the court as our team succeeded. We had three matches today, and ended with three great wins. We played Coastal at 8 AM, Elevation at 10 AM, and KIVA at 1 PM. These games were all very tight and kept everyone on and off the court on their toes.
We started with an 8am match against Coastal, from Virginia and we were in the groove! I think it's our best early morning game this season. Every single player on our team was playing lights out volleyball. We won the first set 25-21. All hitters were moving smoothly and in sync and the defense was so solid. Strong serves with well placed balls were a hallmark of the match. Our second set continued the great pace and strong work. We won it 25-17 with excellent defense and great passing to Paige. That allowed all our hitters to have options. It's hard to say who gets the MVP of the game as we all contributed to a well-orchestrated win.
Our next match was against Elevation. We have played them a few times in the past two years and the matches are always tight. They run a 6-2 and have great hitters available at all times. Our first set was tight throughout but again we had a great back row working with Ashley Dean, Jocelyn Mahayag, and Amber MacDonald. We had strong middle hitting with Alyssa Munlyn. She touches 10'7" and is amazing to watch play this game. She is verbally committed to Mizzou and will be one to watch in college. The kills were coming from all directions and we won the first set 25-22. The volleyball gods came back to pinch us in the second set and we started a little slowly. We were down by as much as three later in the game but Liesl had some huge middle blocks and Harley had several key kills to end the match with a second set win. One more match to go today… KIVA… here we come!
And boy did we save the best match for last! We have not beaten KIVA since I started playing volleyball four years ago. They are a very strong team with huge defense and it's just plain hard to get the ball on the floor on their side of the court. Again, we were ready for the match. Our momentum has been building and we could feel that it was our time. In the first set we stayed one up, one down, or tied until 19 all. We broke through when we went up 21-19 and sped toward a 25-20 win. We were pumped and could feel the win. The second set was equally as close and we battled to a 25-23 second set and match win. You've never seen a more excited group of girls! It would still be so hard to name an MVP of the match. Every single player contributed to the win and that is the best feeling we could ask for. The win gives us a bye in the morning to the quarterfinals and we get to sleep in some for an 11 AM start tomorrow!
Stay tuned for our final day results!
