The members and coaches of the Missouri Thunder Volleyball Club decided to make the long trip to the 2014 AAU Boys’ Junior National Volleyball Championships and that decision seemed to be a good one as they toted their trophy back to their car. The Thunder, coached by Deb Nicollerat, won every match throughout the tournament, earning them a coveted spot in the 17U Championship game.
In the Championship Game, they unfortunately fell to the Ocean Bay 17 Quiksilver, giving them their first loss of the tournament. Nicollerat was excited about the second place finish.
“I am really proud of them,” Nicollerat gushed. “They haven’t really been together since the end of February, which is when our winter high school season ended, so this is the first tournament they’ve played in since the end of February.”
Not only were they unaccustomed to playing with each other, but they only had eight players on their roster for the tournament’s entirety.
“Coming with eight is hard,” said Nicollerat. “We only came with eight players so nobody really gets a break but they did a good job.”
Nicollerat, also the club director of Missouri Thunder Volleyball Club, thinks that the AAU Volleyball National Championships will definitely be on her radar for next year.
“I thought the tournament was great. The kids loved it,” Nicollerat said. “Now that we’ve sent some of the boys it’ll be easier to send some of the girls. It was a good tournament.”
The AAU is glad you had a good time and we hope to see you again next year!
