And we're off! Day one started with a 3pm match against Alliance. We had a great first set that had everyone on their toes and we were firing on all cylinders. We won 25-11 and had some stunning kills by our outside hitter Harley Sebastian. We were in the groove and were off to a good start. Sometimes, though, the volleyball gods can sneak up on you and give you a pinch.... we had a rough start to the second set and got behind early. Leisl Engelbrecht had a monster kill in the middle and we had great serving by Jocelyn Mahayag. Alliance put up some nice blocks and their hitters started coming on strong. We battled hard but lost the second set 24-26. The third set was a nail biter as well but we pulled it out to get our first win of the tournament. We are seated second in 17 open this weekend and expectations are high for a great tournament!!
Our second match was against Lempaalan Kisa, from Finland. We won in two sets and played well. Amber MacDonald, our libero, had a great game defensively and Ashley Miller had some great kills from the outside. I feel like we are still working on a rhythm for the tournament. We last played a match over eight weeks ago and need to get in sync for the long haul. It's great to know that we all can and will step up when the time comes. Our third and final match today will be Dunes at 8pm. They have some very talented players and it should be a good match. .
Our match against Dunes was hard fought and our best of the day. It was fast paced and close throughout. We fought back from a seven-point deficit to win the first set 26-24. Our middles, Alyssa Munlyn and Leisl were both strong and made several key kills. Our defense was amazing across the board and Amber had a couple of awesome pancake digs to keep points going. We won the match in two and look forward to tomorrow's 8am start. We will be in a pool of three teams with Magnum and Sky High. We haven't played Magnum this year but did meet Sky High at our first qualifier in Indianapolis. We are going to "sleep fast" tonight and be ready for an early but short day tomorrow. I predict good things to come!
