The University of the Incarnate Word men’s basketball program signed a pair of top-ranked players on Tuesday during the early signing period.  Head coach Ken Burmeister signed Austin Henry of Cibolo Steele High School and Shawn Johnson of Alief Hastings High School in Houston.

Henry, a 6-8 forward, has a strong inside-outside game and he runs the floor well.  He earned second team all-district honors as a sophomore.  As a junior he averaged 11.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game en route to earning first team all-district and TABC All-Region honors.  He stepped up his game in the playoffs averaging 14.5 points in six contests.  He is ranked as the #66 player in the state of Texas by Rivals.com.  He cited the strong business program at UIW as an important reason for his choice.

“Austin has really matured on the court and improved his game this summer,” said Burmeister.  “He continues to get better and is in the gym all the time.  His body will continue to get stronger and he has a tremendous basketball background with his dad being a longtime AAU coach.”

Johnson, a 6-5 wing, can score at the hoop and shoot from the outside.  He is a two-time District 18-5A First Team selection and was the team MVP as a junior.  He averaged 15.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in 2012-13 and was named to a pair of all-tournament teams.  He is ranked as the #92 player in the state of Texas by Rivals.com.  He will graduate in the top 10 percent of his class and plans to study engineering.

“Shawn gives us a quality person who has a great upside,” said Burmeister.  “He is very athletic and wants to get better.  He is someone that we can build the program around.”

Incarnate Word is currently in their first year as a member of NCAA Division I and the Southland Conference.
