Foster is a four-year starter for Bryan Haley’s Warriorettes. Known for her proficiency from outside the three-point arc, she is already the program’s all-time leader in three pointers made and is just starting her senior year.

Foster is coming off an off-season knee injury that required surgery. Back during the spring, she torn her ACL during AAU basketball, but returned in time for her senior season. She actually had to have a second surgery to repair some torn meniscus in that same knee just a few weeks before the start of preseason practice.

According to Foster, dealing with that knee injury actually helped lead her to play for the Chargers.

“When I hurt my knee in March, I was devastated and started to worry that my dream of playing in college might not come true. I thought that none of the schools would continue to show interest since I wouldn’t be able to play for 6-7 months. I started praying that God would lead me where I needed to be, and that’s when UAH came into the picture. I chose UAH because I love the coaches, players, and the school. I just knew that’s where I wanted to be. I’ll be surrounded with Christian people who love the game of basketball. They’re different from any of the schools I’ve talked to, and it’s a perfect fit for me. It’s seriously an answered prayer.”

UAH is a NCAA Division II program that competes in the Gulf South Conference and are off to a 2-0 start this season. They opened the season with an exhibition game at MTSU and were only defeated by the Lady Raiders, who are a Division I program, 77-60.

Foster will not be the first Warriorette to play for the Lady Chargers. Inga Sorenson played there in 1990 and 1991. Lindsay Floyd played in 2000 and 2001 and then became a coach there after her playing days. Both Sorenson and Floyd played two years of junior college basketball before transferring to UAH.

Prior to her knee injury, some Division I programs had been showing some interest in Foster. She talked about some of the other teams with which she had talked.

“I had visited Belmont, Western Carolina, and Austin Peay. I had talked the most to Austin Peay, Western Carolina, Yale, Eastern Illinois, and Brown. I had just started to receive interest from Vanderbilt, but didn’t hear from them again after I hurt my knee. Morehead State came to a preseason workout before my second surgery. The other schools said they needed to see me play after I recovered, which was less than a month ago. I visited and decided to commit to UAH before then, so I didn’t continue to talk to the other schools.”

Basketball has long been a part of Foster’s life. She comes from a basketball family. Her mother, Janie Randolph, played for the Warriorettes under coach, Keith Short. Her father, Jerry Foster, played for DeKalb County High School and then went on to play at Bethel University. He also played overseas in Chile.

When asked how long she has been playing basketball, Foster responds, “Since I can remember. I grew up with a basketball in my hand. I think I probably played my first organized game in first grade.”

Foster played in DeKalb County for the first several years of her career, but moved to White County at the start of her seventh grade year and played up on the eighth grade team. She became a starter on varsity for the Warriorette high school team as a ninth grader.

Foster ended her junior season with a career total of 198 threes for the top spot in the program and is building on that lead. She has already hit eight three pointers in two games this season. All three of her first three seasons as a Warriorette are among the top 10 in most three pointers made in a season. The 81 she hit last season are the most for a single season.

Last season, Foster averaged 12.4 points per game and has started this season off averaging 16.5 points in the two games they have played.

Haley commented on Foster, “We are very proud of Loren for receiving her scholarship from UAH. She’s worked very hard since a young age to achieve this accomplishment. It was obvious early on that she would be able to play at the next level. We know she is relieved to get this out of the way so she can just focus on her senior year and be able to help this team win games. On and off the court, Loren is a hard worker. She is currently the schools salutatorian academically and a four-year starter for our team. She had to battle through a knee injury this summer and worked really hard to be back for the season opener. She is in the gym religiously. These are all the traits colleges are looking for and UAH was no different. When Coach Heintz called, those were the questions he asked. UAH has a nice campus and is recruiting very good athletes. They have been successful. We feel Loren can step in and play. She is a good shooter and that is what caught Coach Heintz’ eye the most. Loren talked to me about how she liked the campus, the academic offering, the girls on the team and the coach. I just tried to support her when needed, stay out of her way and let her make the decision. My advice was simple, ‘You’ll know when you find the right school.’ We think she did and couldn’t be happier for her and her family.”

Just as Foster excels at knocking down three pointers, her grades are another indication of her work ethic not just on the court, but also in the class room. She is currently ranked second in her class academically.

Foster plans to major in nursing and become an RN. The nursing program at UAH is another reason that led her to choose the Huntsville, Alabama, school.

As far as her goals during her college career both as a student and an athlete, Foster noted, “My goal as a student is to maintain a 4.0. My goal as an athlete is to contribute in any way I can to help the team be successful. A few of the other signees and I have decided that four conference championships would be really nice.”

With her college choice already made and her name signed on the dotted line to secure that commitment, Foster can get down to the business at hand, her senior season as a Warriorette.

“I want to win as many games as possible. I feel like our team has a lot of potential, and our goal is to make it to Murfreesboro this year.”
