Mr. Williams was inducted into the South Jersey Track and Field Hall of Fame on March 24, 2013. Roland is the first Club Coach in South Jersey to receive this prestigious honor from this organization.
The South Jersey Track Coaches Association (SJTCA) selects several candidates each year to recognize, however these candidates are historically outstanding athletes, high school and college coaches and officials. The recognition of Roland Williams, a club coach opens the door of opportunity for other coaches in this category.
Eight of Coach Williams's athletes have been South Jersey Hall of Fame inductees and many of his former athletes held National age group and AAU Junior Olympic Games titles before entering high school.
Although Roland was only a club coach, his contribution to the track and field family is infinite. In 1960, there were zero track and field programs for girls' in New Jersey high schools. Roland Williams began the South Jersey Track Club with all girl athletes to compete in AAU and USATF Junior Olympic Programs. The successful club added boys' to their ranks after a few years.
In 1987 after twenty plus years of coaching the South Jersey Track Club relocated to Orlando, Florida with Williams as Westinghouse Electric Corp. relocated this dedicated employee. Roland continued coaching and organizing the Central Florida Gliders Track Club for thirteen years. Roland was elected National vice Chair of the AAU Athletics Committee and was later appointed AAU Athletics National Co-Chair. His current position is National Coordinator of AAU Primary Track and Field Program and Meet Director for the AAU National Primary Championships.
