Yacine Diop, a 5-foot-10 senior guard for the Seton-La Salle girls basketball team, committed to Pitt last week, her AAU coach, Ron Mumbray, confirmed.
Ranked No. 84 in the country by ESPN HoopGurlz, Diop is Suzie McConnell-Serio's third key recruit from Seton-La Salle. Naje Gibson, a 6-foot senior forward ranked 59th by Hoop Gurlz, and Cassidy Walsh, a 5-7 junior guard who originally committed to Duquesne, have also committed to play for the Panthers.
Mumbray said Diop chose Pitt over Dayton and the University of California, Berkeley.
Pitt finished 9-21 last winter, 0-16 in the Panthers' final Big East season. McConnell-Serio was hired this past April and apparently made Diop a priority.
“Pitt really wanted her,” Mumbray said. “Suzie made no bones about it. She really wanted Yacine. They recruited her. They were committed to her recruiting process. (Yacine) decided that Pitt was the best place for her.
“She wanted to play in the ACC. She wanted to play early, if given the opportunity.”
Diop, who's originally from Senegal, has yet to play for Seton-La Salle after transferring from Oak Hill Academy in Virginia prior to last season. Mumbray said Diop projects as a No. 2 or No. 3 guard.
