5 Hermosa Beach Youths Earn Medals

Five Hermosa Beach youths earned medals in the 20th Amateur Athletic Union Junior Beach Volleyball National Championships held in Hermosa Beach over the weekend.

Maia Hannemann partnered with Mandalay Rennon of Santa Margartia for a first place win in the 12 and under girls division; Luke Grafton teamed with Dane Johnson of Manhattan Beach for a first place win the the 14 and under boys division; Zana Muno took home a bronze medal in the 18 and under girls division; Tanner Smith and Sam Caldwell earned a bronze medal in the 16 and under boys division, according to the AAU website.

All who register to play in an AAU tournament must be an AAU member.

The AAU was founded in 1888 to establish standards and uniformity in amateur sports. During its early years, the AAU served as a leader in international sport representing the U.S. in the international sports federations. The AAU worked closely with the Olympic movement to prepare athletes for the Olympic games. After the Amateur Sports Act of 1978, the AAU has focused its efforts into providing sports programs for all participants of all ages beginning at the grass roots level.
